Things on the XIIIth: July 2018

Gosh, the year is more than half over already… wow. Anyway, I see a lot of cool blogger people doing these monthly update feature posts where they talk about what they did last month, goals for the current month, future plans, and other monthly stuff. I’m not above stealing blogging ideas, so here’s my new monthly update thing! Ahem.

Oh and here at Livid Lightning, my fiscal month begins on the 13th (for reasons) so this will be the day of the month I do this, if I actually continue to do these. I commit to nothing…

Full Disclosure: Way back in the old blogging days, I tried doing weekly progress updates but quickly burnt out on them. A monthly pace seems like a less stressful way to keep track of things so this may, indeed, work out! I’ll just get on with it now.

Blogging Things

First off, I would like to thank everyone so much for the very warm welcome back into the blogging community! I’m grateful for the opportunity to type things on the interwebz. I’ve been on a bit of re-posting spree with backup content from my old website (RIP LightningEllen’s Release). I’ve fizzled out now, but will probably resume at some point in the future.

XIII Random Great Things I Read From Others

Alas, I don’t have the time or energy to obsessively read blogs like I did in the past. But here’s a random sampling of cool posts I was able to read lately. Keep being awesome, everyone!

I) The mysteriously awesome Hostess of Video Game Journals is doing a cool Let’s Play blog walkthrough of Lightning Returns… *fangirl squeal* Check out the first post in the series here.

II) Megan over at A Geeky Gal did a very emotional masterpiece post about dealing with PTSD. It’s not easy talking about things like that so kudos to her!

III) The master of gaming with coffee, Ryan, managed to sit Link and Zelda down to chat with them about their Breath of the Wild trek. I still need to try to get back into that game at some point!

IV) The Gaming Diaries wrote a very thoughtful article about the recent video game addiction disorder firestorm. My opinion is the media needs to stop cashing in on the easy mode “games are evil” viewer crowd.

V) Gaming and booze usually doesn’t go well for me. I guess my reflexes get debuffed, plus increased anger… I don’t remember where I was the next day, and yeah. Thankfully, iplayedthegame put together a great list of games to play while drinkin’. WOOO!! Sorry. …hic

VI) I seriously need to make more time to watch hungrygoriya‘s epic retro LPs. Check out her thoughts on what she learned during the journey through Ultima IV (a series I’ve never played before).

VII) The Not-At-All-A-Narcissist wrote a fantastic review on Thimbleweed Park for the Switch. Lots of snark and sarcastic humor sounds like a “definitely should play someday” game for me!

VIII) Never EVER follow ANY advice from Professional Moron, but if you want to be entertained, check out these Job Interview FAQs.

IX) The Well-Red Mage‘s Community Question 009 is up, courtesy of the Badly Backlogged Mage. I do intend to answer it someday. I left off at 002, at the time of this post, so I have a ways to go…

X) The blogging struggle is real. Kim of Later Levels wrote an amazing post about falling victim to trends. It’s always best to follow your heart when it comes to writing things!

XI) Blogger Blitz by Adventure Rules is back, baby! This time the theme is very different (focusing on villains) but should be a very fun time. Check out the details and find out who is playing here.

XII) Matt of Normal Happenings created something magical about various locations in the Zelda universe, with the help of a talented group of blogger folks (they actually let me write something about the Forest Temple too).

XIII) Athena, Goddess of Wisdom at AmbiGaming, wrote a very cool piece about how to swap out your PS4 hard drive. Those digital games really add up on the smaller 500GB models! My inner Electronic Engineering Technologist loves this stuff!!

Gaming Things

When I took my, um, blogging break, I noticed I had a lot more time to actually play games when I didn’t write about them. I do love writing about games so a balance must be found! Anyway, here’s what I have on the go.

Things I’m Playing Now

Mass Effect Andromeda

July 2018 1
Get it? Warm welcome on a cold planet?? I laughed anyway… Ellen Ryder is awesome.

I’m sorry, but I still love this game!! It’s very relaxing on easy mode and I’ve given my smartass pink-haired Ryder Biotic abilities (thanks SAM) that are hella entertaining to play with. Also Overload which shocks things with lightning bolts. Yeah. There are a few glitches and stuff, but I’m generally having FUN. The most important thing I care about when playing video games. I’m caught up in side quests… Eos and Havarl at 100% Viability. I’m gonna do the same for the snowy (for now I bet) world of Voeld before moving on with the story.

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition

July 2018 2
In my opinion, any game that has lightning happening in the intro cinematic is a freaking masterpiece! 20 out of 10 – Should be played by everyone.

Oh… my… god. The feelz! I never thought a platformer could have me in tears within the first 10 minutes, but this one sure did. Yep. It’s awesome but freaking hard. 3 hours in and I’m stuck at a rising water part right after you get the complex projectile jump thingy. I’m learning slowly. Can I blame the fact I can’t see the screen through my tears? I think that’s a great excuse…

Big Gaming Plans
(subject to change at any time based on moodiness level)

After Andromeda is done, I have a goal to Platinum the HD collection version of Metal Gear Sold 2, my first time with the series. It should take about 60 hours (according to guides I read) but with my horrible stealth skillz, probably longer. It’s a super fun game with lots of secrets. So… must do everything!! Snake is also pretty badass.

July 2018 3
An actual PS3 screenshot I took with my cheap HD Capture Card. I haven’t done a single playthrough yet, but I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve seen so far.

Collecting Things

  • Two moar Amiibo are in the mail as I type this: Marina and Pearl from the Splatoon series (no plans to play that game ever, but I’m addicted to Amiibo). They will bring my total up to a number I’m too embarrassed to say (it’s all of them ever released anywhere in the world… sigh).
  • I preordered the Switch version of Mega Man 11 simply because it came with an exclusive Amiibo. The game does look fun so there’s that. Still waiting on news for the new Smash Bros. series and the upcoming Dark Souls one.
  • I broke down and preordered my first hella expensive First 4 Figures statue: Banjo-Kazooie. I have so many special childhood feelz for that game and I have over a year to save up for it so no regrets!
  • I scored a NES Classic at a normal retail outlet during the restock recently. I did grab one back on original launch day, but donated it to a very good cause!

Reading Things

Books Read in 2018: 3

Now Reading: A History of Video Games in 64 Objects. Very neat look back on the evolution of the video game industry. I’m about a third of the way through the book now. It seems video games have always been dismissed as irrelevant time wasters by the masses, but the industry has sure come a long way.

Watching Things

Movies Watched in 2018: 0
TV Shows Watched in 2018: 0
Let’s Plays Watched in 2018: 0

Yeah. I’m not one for sitting down and watching things. I’m so far behind on TV and movies… I can’t remember the last movie I saw. I honestly feel guilty just sitting there witnessing things happen on a screen when I could be making progress in video games or writing stuff. I’m going to try to watch more popular things though. It helps with social situations in the real world that I’m already terrible at.

For LPs, I’m currently watching Athena of AmbiGaming’s super entertaining Let’s Play of Mass Effect. After that, I’m going to finish up Hungry Goriya’s Let’s Play of the classic Sega Master System game, Phantasy Star.

There you have it! My kick at doing a monthly progress post thingy. What’s anyone reading this up to these days? Comments section is down below if you want to share your thoughts on things!

Thanks for reading!

If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblings… I mean, articles here!

Really like what you read and feel like financially supporting Livid Lightning? HA! Probably not, but hey, here’s a couple ways to fuel my writing pipe dream!

"Lightning" Ellen

My name is Ellen, and I've been babbling on the interwebz about video games for over 15 years. Video games themselves have been a large part of my life since 5-year-old me first encountered a SNES in a children's hospital. Fun times... Video game escapism is still the #1 coping mechanism for adult me these days.

    1. Is. See, I even did a typo, spotted it, and corrected myself. Now I’m here talking to myself like that bit in Jurassic Park where Jeff Goldblum is talking to himself. Indeed. That’s Chaos theory.

  1. Thanks for the shout out! Also, I laughed at your “fiscal month” starting on the 13th. 😀
Man, I don’t even like putting these kind of updates out monthly, let alone every week – no wonder you burned out on that! I did a big one for July and that’s pretty much good enough for me unless I decide to make some kind of drastic change that I feel deserves an update.

    1. I’m also now discovering you will get a few marketing-bot follows if you use the word “fiscal” in a post, haha.

Weekly was way too much, that’s for sure! I always enjoy reading your updates. 🙂

  2. Should start doing this lmfao. I just did my first quality of life post yesterday ( Way overdue but I think I may start doing more around big milestones.), time to steal blogging ideas lol.

  3. Oooh I caught a Lightning strike! *sigh* I just thought about lightning bugs, and now I have the mental image of tiny Lightnings flying around kicking ass. It’s pretty epic. Thanks for the shout out! Of COURSE I’m number VII 😀 Taking hiatuses frees up so much time. I’m probably going to do another one this November like I did last year; it was nice to have a break, even though I did miss it. Of course I also switched to an every other week posting schedule, which is so much less stressful. I’m terrible at movie watching, too. I have so many on my list. It’s hard for me to concentrate lately, so even finding a LP to get into is difficult. One of the few saving graces in that is Hungry Goriya’s. Even games I usually have no interest in are hella fun I find my mind wandering and my fingers, too, to my phone where I end up on the dreaded Book of Faces *shudder* Look I don’t want to say it, but I’m glad you bought that Banjo-Kazooie figurine. I told another friend to buy a Victorian era poetry book for $30, which is wildly cheap for something so rare. I’m an enabler and I don’t even care. What was this noble cause for the NES Classic????? 😀 I learned my lesson about judging games before I play them, so I’m still looking forward to playing Andromeda and really just the entire Mass Effect series. Ori and the Blind Forest had me in tears within ten minutes, too. It was so moving. I cannot WAIT for Ori and the Will of the Wisps ♥

    1. OMG!! I wanna write something about little Lightnings kicking ass now, haha. Just so you know, number VII might be your permanent spot for as long as I do these, my friend 🙂

Blogging is so stressful, yet so relaxing to vent about stuff, haha. Thanks!! Life is short and I don’t regret buying a hella expensive statue of my favourite bear and bird duo.

And thank you for sharing your entertaining thoughts and following my new blog! Much appreciated. You were the top commenter on my old blog, by the way 🙂

      1. I smell a fanfic 😀

Isn’t it weird how it’s both stressful and relaxing? It’s stressful because I want to keep up, but venting and getting my thoughts out relieves a big burden so I’m always happy when I do it, but then I’m still worried about if I’m writing things to the caliber that I want to write them. Nothing can ever be sinple.

        Oh wow was it??

        1. “The Adventures of Little Lightnings” I’m… still working on the title 😛

I know, right?? I hate the stress of wanting to post so many things and not having time, but it’s so nice when a post is finished and my thoughts are out there.

          Yeah… oh well! 💸

  4. Thanks for the shoutout Light! :D. That interview was pretty fun and I’m hoping to do a lot more of those in the future.

Keep it going! You’re doing fantastically! I’m looking forward to next month’s update.

    1. No problem, my fellow Canadian coffee addict! If you ever want to interview Lightning, let me know! I might be able to convince her to do one without getting Snow Punched, haha.

        1. Yass!! We can discuss more after the 30th, if you want. I’m currently panicking over my Blogger Blitz post that’s due next Monday, haha.
