12 Days of Blogmas: 9 Games A Backlogged

Hey! Listen. You know that popular Christmas song called the 12 Days of Christmas? Athena over at AmbiGaming came up with a cool holiday themed community collaboration idea to gamify that kinda-as-annoying-as-Navi song (that we all love or hate). Basically, it’s a countdown list each day that ends up with 364 items, times however many bloggers do this, at the end of the event (something like that… my maths is bad). Be warned that my singing voice is terrible, but here we go, eh!

🎶 On the 4th day of Blogmas, the gamers said to me: Give us 9 games on your to-play list. 🎶

1) God of War (2018)

Kratos looks like the most badass dad ever! This game has received so much praise and looks so amazing. This is my highest priority to play in 2019 and it will be my first God of War game. Just gotta clear Detroit Become Human off my PS4’s gaming plate first! I’m trying really hard to stick to a “one game in-progress per console” rule…

Blogmas 4 - God of War
BOY!!! Sorry. I couldn’t resist.

2) Final Fantasy VI

Universally praised as one of the best Final Fantasy games ever, it’s about time I got around to playing it in 2019! It’s unlikely the game will top the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy in my gamer heart, but I love Final Fantasy and want to play all the mainline games one day. I still know almost nothing about VI’s story so I’m excited for an unspoiled gaming experience with Terra and her crew.

This fight looks like it’ll be fun…

3) Spider-man (2018)

I thoroughly enjoyed the old PlayStation 2 era open world Spider-man (2002) game. I haven’t played as the webslinger since then. And wow, this game looks freaking fantastic! I plan to get around to it in 2019 as soon as I see it on sale somewhere. To the late great Stan Lee!

Can’t wait to take Spidey Selfies!

4) Metal Gear Solid

Not sure why, but I have a weird habit of playing second in series games first. After I finally achieve (or give up on) my crazy Metal Gear Solid 2 Platinum trophy hunt, I’ll be giving the first MGS game a go, then continuing on with the series from there.

Blogmas 4 - Metal Gear Solid

5) Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

I want to get back into the Assassin’s Creed series soon. I fell out of love with it after Unity (didn’t hate it… just found it kinda meh overall). Origins and Odyssey look amazing (and I’ll get there), but I want to jump back into the series with the earliest title I haven’t played yet. Syndicate looks like it’ll be great!

Blogmas 4 - Assassin's Creed Syndicate
The Assassin twins seem like quite the cool pair.

6) Half-Life 2

It has been ages since I played a FPS. It’s not my favourite genre, to be honest, but it’s nice to switch up genres every once in a while. This game was highly recommended by esteemed Professional Moron so… eh, why not?

Blogmas 4 - Half-Life 2

7) Undertale

I know almost nothing about this game, other than a lot of gamers out there really love it. Can’t wait to see this game for myself!

Blogmas 4 - Undertale
Quite the colourful cast!

8) Kingdom Hearts

Long ago, I got about halfway through the first Kingdom Hearts game and put it down for some reason. I never got back into it. With all the hype around Kingdom Hearts 3, I think it’s about time I gave the series another try! My gamer tastes have evolved since my cranky teenage days.

Blogmas 4 - Kingdom Hearts
I remember playing a Tarzan game very similar to this!

9) Chrono Trigger

Another classic JRPG masterpiece I haven’t played yet. I’m grateful I know very little about this hella popular retro game. Looking forward to probably getting headaches from time paradoxes!

Blogmas 4 - Chrono Trigger
Seems interesting…

Gosh… it was hard to pick a mere 9 games that I want to play. My backlog monster has me at its mercy, let me tell you.

Oh and to continue the Blogmas song:

🎶 … 10 playing reasons, 11 games I love, and the link to my 12 gaming memories! 🎶

Be sure to check out the host Goddess of Wisdom’s version of the song thus far (including links to other participants, eh).

Thanks for reading!

If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblings… I mean, articles here!

Really like what you read and feel like financially supporting Livid Lightning? HA! Probably not, but hey, here’s a couple ways to fuel my writing pipe dream!

My name is Ellen, and I've been babbling on the interwebz about video games for over 15 years. Video games themselves have been a large part of my life since 5-year-old me first encountered a SNES in a children's hospital. Fun times... Video game escapism is still the #1 coping mechanism for adult me these days.

  1. Some great games on your to-play list quite long ones too, myself I want to get round to playing all the Yakuza games, Persona & Shin Megami Tensai games on top off all the games that are coming out next year.

      1. Wow. Pretty solid games in your bucket list you got there LightningEllen. It’s already February, so you must have finished some already? I see that God of War (2018) is your no.1 in the list. You pretty much made the right choice to make that game a priority. I can say that the latest God of War is one of the best games of 2018. Kratos is facing his biggest struggle—becoming a father.

        1. Thanks! I got a little sidetracked with that life thing, but God Of War is in my PS4 and ready to go as soon as I have time, haha. Kratos and this game look amazing!!

  2. Half-Life 2 is a must if you love Metroid Prime. In my opinion, Half-Life 2 is the greatest FPS of them all. By far. AND YES GET CHRONO TRIGGER! SORRY, I’M SHOUTING! But I just today started playing through it again on Steam. You’ll totally dig it.

  3. Ooh Half Life 2! I really don’t like FPSs and only tried HL2 because it was in the Orange Box with Portal. I played it for a bit, thought ‘meh’, quit it, only to pick it up again a year later and decide I really like it! I still avoid FPSs but the story is definitely worth experiencing.

    1. FPS are definitely low on my favourite game genre list. But the special ones with a cool stories have never disappointed me. I’m glad you got into HL2. I can’t wait to see the story and do some pew-pewing, haha.

  4. *hysterical cackling* I think I’m at 251 on my backlog. I just downloaded The First Tree where you’re a fox mother on the surface but it goes deeper. It looks GORGEOUS. I still need to finish FFVI. Many people consider it the best but I love my VII more of course. I have a box of RPGs from Cheap Boss Attack to contend with now. I’ll be playing forever 😩

      1. I know! It’ll only take me 100 more years :p I’m probably going to start playing that soon. I think I’m done with Octopath. I was looking at YouTube for final boss tips and it is a COMPLICATED fight. Like I don’t know if I want to attempt it myself, especially since nothing really happens at the end and I’ve finished everything else. I don’t need the glory of saying I completely beat the game either, and I want to finish up FFVI!
