12 Days of Blogmas: 4 Dramatic Moments

Hey! Listen. You know that popular Christmas song called the 12 Days of Christmas? Athena over at AmbiGaming came up with a cool holiday themed community collaboration idea to gamify that kinda-as-annoying-as-Navi song (that we all love or hate). Basically, it’s a countdown list each day that ends up with 364 items, times however many bloggers do this, at the end of the event (something like that… my maths is bad). Be warned that my singing voice is terrible, but here we go, eh!

🎶 On the 9th day of Blogmas, the gamers said to me: Share four dramatic/memorable game moments 🎶

!!!HUGE SPOILER WARNING!!!! for The Last of Us, Dragon Age II, Resident Evil 4 and Lightning Returns. STOP reading if you don’t want me to ruin these great games for you. You’ve been warned! I’m guilt free if ya didn’t listen to me. I mean, c’mon… my warning is in all caps.

I’m serious… there are big SPOILERS for those games in this post. That was you last warning and last chance to click-y your browser’s back button.

…. no one ever listens to me… sigh.

1) The ending “choice” in The Last of Us.

Ugh! That scene with Ellie really got to me, man. I had many surgeries over the course of my life, and the whole process terrifies me to my core. My biggest fear is that I won’t wake up and I’m basically at the mercy of surgeons. Well, when I saw poor Ellie about to be killed on purpose during a surgical procedure, I freaking lost it. The greater good mattered not to me, and my Joel cut down those unarmed monster doctors without hesitation. That dramatic moment really got to me… I was a mess for a few days after that.

I’m not proud of Joel… or me.

2) The fate of Hawke’s mom in Dragon Age II.

So much… ugh. This is one of the most horrifying events I’ve stumbled across in a non-horror game. Basically, a Blood Mage serial killer decides he wants to get his dead wife back. To do this, he kills off a bunch of women and combines their body parts into a Frankenstein-like creation. The final piece? Leandra’s (Hawke’s mom) head. Hawke at least gets a few parting words with what’s left of her (or his) poor mom, after murdering that twisted freak.

No words… 😦

3) Meeting a Regenerador for the first time in Resident Evil 4.

Gah! I hate these things so much!! The first time I met one was quite the dramatic moment, let me tell you. You find them in this medical experimentation lab, which adds to my horror tenfold. And the most effective way to kill them is to use a thermal scope to pick off the multiple Plagas inside them, as they shakily shamble towards you.

That heavy breathing noise they make too… AH!!

4) Lightning’s revelation at the end of Lightning Returns.

This changed my life. Basically, Lightning’s negative emotions, that she tries so damn hard to hide from the world, were what manifested into Lumina, the being that did all that damage during the game. Defeated Lightning cries out at the thought of being alone for eternity as the new Etro in the dark abyss. Finally embracing her heart (Lumina) is what saves the day, and produces that beautiful endings that makes me wanna cry.

Pushing away the people you care about most leaves you broken, miserable, and alone. I know that trip all too well…

Whoa! This post took a dark spoilerific focus, didn’t it? I am a drama queen, I guess.

Oh and to continue the Blogmas song:

🎶 … 5 replayed games, 6 future failed resolutions, 7 babbling blog posts, 8 cool characters, 9 games a backlogged10 playing reasons, 11 games I love, and the link to my 12 gaming memories! 🎶

Be sure to check out the host Goddess of Wisdom’s version of the song thus far (including links to other participants, eh).

Thanks for reading!

If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblings… I mean, articles here!

Really like what you read and feel like financially supporting Livid Lightning? HA! Probably not, but hey, here’s a couple ways to fuel my writing pipe dream!

"Lightning" Ellen

My name is Ellen, and I've been babbling on the interwebz about video games for over 15 years. Video games themselves have been a large part of my life since 5-year-old me first encountered a SNES in a children's hospital. Fun times... Video game escapism is still the #1 coping mechanism for adult me these days.

  1. I cunningly avoided your first two (because as you said, spoilers!), but I love the second two picks!

Those Regenerador things are absolutely terrifying! I remember encountering them for the first time and literally just running away from the controller and console and leaving poor Leon to die alone!

    1. Yay! I’m glad you weren’t spoiled by anything. I’m always super paranoid when I talk about spoilers in a post, haha.

I don’t blame you for leaving Leon alone with that thing. Yikes!! Few monsters in games freak me out as much as those… 😬

  2. Honestly I always agreed with Joel’s decision I would make the same choice if it was somebody I cared about, every time I read or hear someone talking about TLOU it makes me want to give it another playthrough.

    1. I 100% agreed with Joel at the time! Hearing people call him out on it shook me a bit, but I still think I would’ve done the same thing in his shoes. I’m very protective of the people I care about. You should totally do another playthrough!
