Things on the XIIIth: May 2019

Welcome to my monthly progress post that happens on the 13th, which marks the start of a new fiscal month here on Livid Lightning. Get it? XIII is my favourite number… because I like Final Fantasy XIII a lot? Jeez… tough crowd.

OMG!! This is my 100th post on Livid Lightning. Woot! And almost a full year since I restarted the blogging thing, too. I’m actually quite impressed with myself for not deleting this site yet… I do think my mental health and self-destructive tendencies are under control for good now. I plan to be babbling on the internet for as long as I can game, read, write words, and breathe. Thank you for all the support!

I’m also hella happy spring 2019 decided to show up! Saturdays seem to be rain days (ugh… why not Monday if it MUST rain??), but I’m enjoying the walk to work every morning in daylight AND without a winter coat. Plus my two cats are thrilled it’s warm enough for me to open my apartment windows for them again.

Things on the XIII May 2019 Cats
That bird in the tree has no idea how lucky it is…. Another good reason to keep your precious kitties inside! The little furry feline monsters are responsible for the deaths of millions of birds each year.

Intro outta the way and here’s what I’ve been up to this fiscal month.

Blogging Things

I just write what I want whenever, I guess! For no reason at all, I started a babblethrough series on Life Is Strange. It’s already finished but I wanted this post to be my 100th post so Episode 4 and 5 are scheduled for next week. For future post plans, I want to get a few reviews done for games I’ve beaten recently. Other than that…. I dunno.

Oh and a huge thank you to my latest patron, Professional Moron! I’m very much still on the fence about continuing with Patreon. It just doesn’t feel right asking for money from people for babbling on the internet, you know? We shall see.

XIII Random Cool Things Written By Other Bloggers

Alas, I don’t have the time or energy to obsessively read blogs like I did in the past. But here’s a random sampling of cool posts I was able to read lately. Keep being awesome, everyone!

I) Purple’s Presentation: “Anatomy Of The Well-Red Mage – Who he is, and how he Came to Be” – Whoa, dudes! That’s awesome that the Purple Prose Mage got a chance to do a live presentation at a WordPress Meetup. Huge thanks for the shout-out, too! It was so surreal to see my avatar and blog up on a presentation screen.

II) Thero’s Top Five Video Game Themed Easter Eggs. – Gotta love stumbling on Easter eggs in games! Bonus points to Thero for including a reference in Dragon Age Inquisition.

III) [GAME REVIEW] Super Mario Odyssey – While I was certainly less enthused about Super Mario Odyssey, to say the least, I enjoyed reading Red Metal’s analysis of the game.

IV) Blogovision 2019: A Sea of Stars – Normally I like to partake in all the blogger collabs I see, but my brain just wasn’t working for this one. Kim of Later Levels hit many high notes in her post! I seriously need to play a Monkey Island game one of these years.

V) Haiku Friday: Professional Moron Does Japanese Poetry – A wonderful and sarcastic moronic take on that Haiku poetry thing by the Professional Moron!

VI) I Built A PC! – Huge congrats to Shelby over at Falcon Game Reviews for building his very own gaming PC. I wish them many good years together.

VII) The State of the Gamer: 5/7/19 – Always enjoy reading what the Shameful Narcissist is up to! I think I might be sold on the Phoenix Wright series… just need time to play video games.

VIII) Valley of The Dragons Review – I hate movies with misleading titles. DReager1’s review stating the distinct lack of dragons in this film makes it a pass from me.

IX) 11 JRPGs I Wish I Had Time To Play [11:11] – So many games so little time… A great list of cool JRPG games on gamergal.exe that I’ll likely never have time to play.

X) Virtual Collector: Top 5 Resident Evil 2 Versions I’d Like to Own – I hope Hundstrasse gets all the copies of RE2 he seeks. Oh… it might be cool to track down all the version of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy someday.

XI) Analyzing Games the Aether Way – I’m lazy and didn’t play the game Loved like Aether suggested. But it was neat to read about his reviewing process thoughts.

XII) Fallout 76 – Player Vending! – I’m never going to play Fallout 76 because I don’t want to deal with people in an online game. It was very interesting to read about the game’s new selling features on Bandicoot Warrior.

XIII) The Interesting Case of the Hero’s Journey – Athena may be taking a break from new posts, but I’ve been reading up on some of AmbiGaming’s old content. This brilliant post about how Journey sticks true to the monomyth triggered me to finally give this game a go.

Fallout 4

Things on the XIII May 2019 Fallout 4
Actually, I did it for the Platinum trophy.

Fina-freaking-ly! I’ve had this game since 2015 and I am so happy I finally platinumed it. I’m not proud of what I had to do for that trophy, but it’s done. Yay! I’m planning to do a bit of babbling about my final experiences with the game in the form of log posts. Then I’ll probably review it. Please stand by…

Things on the XIII May 2019 Paradigm
“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will send me spiraling into a deep depression.” Truer words were never spoken… 😭

I’m not a huge fan of the point-and-click genre since I only have a few of these types of games under my belt. I loved this one! So much dark and depressing humour. Review is in-progress.

Things on the XIII May 2019 Journey
Lightning during a snowstorm?? So awesome!

This was quite the emotional experience! Definitely going to be reviewing this game very soon. The biggest complaint I have is that there aren’t many people online to meet these days. I met 3 whole travelers during my several hour playthrough.

Games Actively Playing

Nothing at this very moment. Focusing on that writing about games thing.

Games On the In-Progress Back Burner

I’ll get back to these great games… eventually.

  • Chrono Trigger
  • The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
  • The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild
  • Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty
  • Dark Souls

Gaming Plans

With all the Life Is Strange posting I’ve been doing lately, I think I’m going to pick up the prequel, Before the Storm, sometime very soon. I’ll also work on clearing the other games that came with my Collector’s Edition copy of Journey. I’m in the mood for relaxing stuff.

New Swag

The Legend of Shepard T-Shirt from Redbubble

Things on the XIII May 2019 The Legend of Commander Shepard T-Shirt

I would so play a Mass Effect/Legend of Zelda crossover game. Link could pwn the Reapers while Commander Shepard takes dow Ganon, in the epic final battle! Oooo…. I could at least do a fanfiction.

Lightning Farron Art from Cealaigh Molden Fine Art

Things on the XIII May 2019 Lightning Farron Fanart

There’s this really cool artist I started following recently on Twitter, . I noticed she had a Lightning A4 piece for sale so I bought it. No regrets!! Fang and Vanille A4s might also be on the way… I think I’ve developed a Final Fantasy XIII fanart addiction. Ah, well… whatever makes me happy.

New Swag Plans

No more impulse purchases! Need to save monies for other stuff. Like retirement and all that boring adult investment stuff. Wait… I think I saw something shiny on Amazon!!

Tales of Lunis Aquaria

Always love supporting new authors! A blogger I follow recently published this book (her first one). I really enjoyed this collection of tales. I hope there’s a Book 2 someday. This world is quite interesting and I’d love to learn more about it.

Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell

Down and Out in Paris and London

I will never ever complain about my job or life again. Thanks to Professional Moron for recommending this classic!

Reading Now

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

A Game of Thrones

Might as well see what all the hype is about. No plans to watch the TV show (Starbucks cup… LOLz) but I’ll give the books a shot. I’m not too far into this first book but I’m liking it. The sex scenes I’ve encountered so far made me want to barf, not gonna lie, but this is an interesting and well written world for sure. I also love the direwolves!

Reading Plans

The Game of Thrones series could very well take me until the end of the year to read…

I’m just not a good watcher of things. I get bored really easily when I watch most movies or TV shows. Sigh.

Life & Other Things

Things are going forward and I’m trying not to worry about anything that has been bringing me down lately. Random other life things:

  • Super excited for my first trip outside of Canada happening in July. That’ll be here soon.
  • My stupid car failed it’s biyearly safety inspection thingy (mandatory in Nova Scotia). I guess the fuel lines are rotting out so that needs attention very soon. Hello, unplanned expenses!

There you have it! My monthly progress post thingy. What’s anyone reading this up to these days? Comments section is down below if you want to share your thoughts on things!

Thanks for reading!

If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblings… I mean, articles here!

Really like what you read and feel like financially supporting Livid Lightning? HA! Probably not, but hey, here’s a couple ways to fuel my writing pipe dream!

"Lightning" Ellen

My name is Ellen, and I've been babbling on the interwebz about video games for over 15 years. Video games themselves have been a large part of my life since 5-year-old me first encountered a SNES in a children's hospital. Fun times... Video game escapism is still the #1 coping mechanism for adult me these days.

    1. Nice view the cats & you’ve got there I keep my cats indoors too I don’t want them killing any birds or getting run down by traffic. You should definitely pick up Before the Storm it’s great!, a little shorter than the first game there’s only 3 episodes to the story plus a bonus episode that I don’t wanna spoil but I’ll say it was very emotional. Congrats on hitting 100 posts I haven’t been here from the beginning but I’ve gone back and read them all. The Lightning art from @CMoldenFineArt is fantastic she’s one of my favourite artists on Twitter and I can’t think of anyone better to own some sweet FFXIII art than yourself.

      1. Thank you! The view of the Halifax harbour definitely sold me on this apartment. Exactly! It’s best to keep cats inside for their safety and the safety of birds. I’m aiming to play Before the Storm in June, if all goes well with my gaming plans, which it never usually does, haha.

And I think I owe you another huge thank you for introducing me to @CMoldenFineArt 🙂

        1. No problem it’s great to see talented people getting supported and helping people find them is the least I can do. I totally get that gaming plans never seem to work out for me either for one reason or another, I look forward to the eventual babble through series on Before The Storm playing as Chloe is quite the thing especially if you really roleplay the character unfortunately she’s not voiced by Ashley Burch as there was a problem with the actors unions at the time but she was a writer on the game and Rhianna D’Vries who voices Chloe in BTS did a good job filling some big shoes.

          1. Huh… I didn’t know she wasn’t voiced by Burch in BTS. I wonder if I’ll notice the difference. Thanks for all of the awesome support!

    2. Thank you! We got a bit of snow today for some weird reason… but summer will be here soon, haha. Thanks again for reading my babbles! 🙂

  1. 100 bloody posts, eh? Congrats! That’s a massive pat on the back for you, as we do ‘ere in Manchester. Ecky thump.

Glad thee enjoyed that book, too, it’s remained one of my favourites since 2001. 17 hour shift in a 10ft-10ft kitchen, anyone?

    1. Thanks, eh!! I can’t even imagine working through that hell… that book sure gave me a new appreciation for my job and all that. Things could always be worse!

  2. Yes! Just write about whatever you feel like! That is really the best way to blog. Anything less is doing yourself a disservice.

And congrats on getting through Fallout 4! MaybeInMay in action!

  3. Thankyou for the mention! I love a good monthly progress babble – it’s great to hear what other people are up to in the gaming / blogging world. I need to get round to starting Journey at some point, and congrats on finishing Fallout 4!

  4. Aww, I love the photo of your kitties! ❤ Too cute! ^_^
Congrats on your 100th post! That's awesome that you're starting to read A Song of Ice and Fire and you're liking it for the most part so far. I love the books. 🙂
Also, looking forward to your review for that Paradigm game. That quote is fantastic. 😛

  5. Thanks for the shoutout! Yeah, I definitely think you wouldn’t like the film much at all. It’s got quite a bit of romance and the dragons never really get to show til the end so it’s super misleading through and through.

Right now I’ve been reading through the Sword Art Online novels. I just finished book 16 and am now on 17. Meanwhile I read the X-Men Inferno trade which was pretty cool. For games I’ve been slowly getting through the Star War titles so hopefully those should be done soon.

We’ve been getting a lot of rain over here as well. Hopefully it stays nice and sunny for a while now because it definitely does feel like we’re going to completely skip Spring at this rate

    1. No problem! Misleading titles are the worst and dragons are so awesome. Sigh…

Whoa! Sounds like Sword Art Online has a lot of novels.

And it’s still raining here… C’mon summer and sunshine!

  6. I added Paradigm to my backlog. I’ve enjoyed the point-and-clicks I’ve played. Phoenix Wright is a bit of that, too, but it’s more visual novel, and it’s so over the top dramatic and hilarious, I don’t think you’ll mind too much lol. I hear morbid humor and I’m interesting it’s what got me to watch Dead to Me, whose main character is such a snarky bitch dealing with grief using morbid humor and I love her lol.

A Game of Thrones is…oof with the sexual scenes. He’s gratuitous with them and you’re not the only person to voice a complain/critique. I bet there’s some internet database that has the pages where those things happen, and if there isn’t there should be lol. I’m all about informed decisions. Did you know there’s a site that will tell you if a dog lives/dies?

Have fun traveling abroad! I think the first time I did so was my honeymoon when I took a cruise to Bermuda! Then I flew to Mexico for my brother’s wedding. All of my international travel has had to do with weddings, huh. I should remedy that :p

    1. Let me know what you think of Paradigm when you get it!

Just finished reading Game of Thrones. Yeah… the sexy time elements weren’t exactly my favourite parts, haha. I should look for databases like that! That’s a good idea.

Thank you! I’m not going too, too far (New Jersey) but it will be my first time away from Canada. I’m excited!! 🙂 I’d like to see more of the world. My IRL BFF wants to go to South America one of these days and I’ll probably tag along with her.

      1. I just put it on my Steam list! I’ll probably pick it up during the Steam Summer Sale if it’s one of them.

That is exciting! Crossing that man-made border is still a milestone. I thought it was so weird when I went to Las Vegas. Just realizing I was so far away from my home was mind boggling.
