Things on the XIIIth: June & July 2019

Welcome to my monthly progress post that happens on the 13th (unless I miss a month… oops), which marks the start of a new fiscal month here on Livid Lightning. Get it? XIII is my favourite numberโ€ฆ because I like Final Fantasy XIII a lot? Jeezโ€ฆ tough crowd.

I haven’t been feeling very social media friendly lately, so I haven’t been online for a few weeks. I hope everyone’s rocking whatever they’re working on these days! I’ve been busy battling my brain’s negative thought patterns, trying to platinum the Mass Effect trilogy, and attempting more of the social offline thing.

June and July 2019
Relatable memes make life worth living.

Oh and I went on an amazing trip to the USA and got to meet two of my blogging buddies (Athena and The Shameful Narcissist) in reality. That was the best IRL experience ever!! First time leaving Canada, too, eh. I’ll probably be blogging about my trip in another post, but TL;DR I went to the great State of New Jersey and also got to spend a day wandering around New York City (just… WOW).

Anyway, I suspect my social media presence will never be the same as it once was. That’s life! We move forward, we grow, and we change.

Blogging Things

After some pondering, I’ve officially closed down my Patreon page. I just didn’t feel right about it. I do this for fun and it will never make me money, nor should it. Thanks to the 4 awesome folks who pledged to give me money every month for babbling on the internet:

XIII Great Posts From Other Bloggers

I)ย Agony Aunt: โ€œYou made me put the toilet seat down & you will pay!โ€ย – Never, ever follow Professional Moron’s relationship advice… you may find yourself in a machine-gun war over proper toilet seat edict.

II) Delving Into Kirby’s Dream Course 1 – I have fond memories of spending an entire childhood summer playing Kirby’s Dream Course with my mom. It was nice to see Pete Davison of MoeGamer discuss the cute pink puffball’s mini-golf-like game on the SNES.

III) That Time I Made Friends with a Deathclaw in Fallout 4 – Randomly encountering a Deathclaw in Fallout usually evokes feelings of terror and panic. But as Cary reminded me on this Virtual Bastion post, not all of them will kill you on sight.

IV) 2009 and the Biggest Games Turning 10, Part I – Overpowered reminded me that 2009 was a freaking awesome year in gaming!

V) The Grieving Power of Video Games – It was hard not to cry while reading The Video Game Virtuoso’s tribute post to his father. More proof that video games have the power to help us through our life’s tragedies.

VI) Blogovision 2019: The Final – I’ll admit I have no idea what that Eurovision thingy is all about… still, I enjoyed reading the results post from Pix and Overthinker Y’s fabulous parody blogging event.

VII)ย The Broken Rose: Chapter 16 โ€“ In Bloom – The latest chapter of The Shameful Narcissist’s latest Final Fantasy VII fanfiction is out and awesome! One of these days I’m going to attempt to write a fanfiction of my own, eh.

VIII) Gendered Careers โ€“ Where are the women in Pro Esports? – The Backlog Crusader wrote an excellent piece about female inclusion in the Esports industry.

IX) Trees in Progress – Yikes! Miniature terrain trees are harder to make then you’d think… Good job, Kuribo!

X) Fandom Friday: Switching up my backlog – So according to this post by The Gaming Diaries, there is a game about cute dragons in a cafe on the Switch… WANT!! Ahem.

XI) Leveling Up Adult Friendships – I’ve always failed pretty hard at the making and maintaining friends thing in reality. I like to think I’ve improved as an adult, though! I want few friends in my life who I can truly connect with, not a big group of “fake” friends who only like a fake me. Anyway, A Geeky Gal provided some awesome tips on how to attract those special friends.

XII) Blame it on the Game – wwwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaa ssssssssssssdddddddddddddfffffffffffffffffffffff…. You ok, Video Games Nebula???

XIII)ย Games โ€œBack Thenโ€: The Benefits of Nostalgic Thinkingย – Athena’s back to blogging. Woot! Loved learning about nostalgia and it’s mostly positive impact on our mental health. You are never alone when you have old game character friends to chill with.

Gaming Things

Games Completed in 2019:ย 9 (+2)

Games Newly Finished

Mass Effect (PS3) – Platinumed on June 21st, baby! I have a post written about Week 2 and 3 of my quest so that should go live soon-ish (maybe).

RuneScape (Web Browser) – While visiting my folks for the Canada Day long weekend, I dusted off my long abandoned RuneScape account to see how my very first MMO was doing. I completed a new free quest but quickly got bored and remembered why I quit: it’s essentially just one endless level grinder. No, thank you.

As much as the game has changed in the visual department, it still boils down to watching your character do stuff over and over and over again to level up skills. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz…..

Games Actively Played

Mass Effect 2 (PS3) – Rolling right along with my Mass Effect Platinum quest. I’ve acquired 60% of the shiny trophies in this one so far. About to go grab the Reaper IFF on my first playthrough. I do have some draft posts of my progress which may or may not be published.

Asari Bartender
Best father-in-law ever!

The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (Switch) – Still very, very slowly making my way through the “masterpiece” Zelda game I’m not overly fond of (I only play it when traveling, apparently). An awesome friend I was visiting in the USA made some progress for me, and then I played more while waiting at Newark Liberty International Airport on the way home. I will one day go on enough trips to finish this game. Two Divine Beasts acquired (Zora and Goron), two more to go. Guess I better start planning my next IRL trip.

Random Stuff: USA Souvenirs

USA Souviners
I love buying cool things I don’t really need! I’m a great tourist ๐Ÿ™‚

Gaming Swag: Charmander Plush, Angry Kirby Plush, Bower Keychains

Nintendo Store Stuff
When in NYC, pay homage to the Nintendo Store and buy stuff! It was hella crowded but awesome. Chamander got me through some medical anxiety (long story), and Kirby’s mood matched mine when I had to go back to work after my vacation. Sigh. All good things must end.

A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin

The super popular A Song of Ice and Fire series is… ok to me so far. I’m honestly not a fan of the senseless violence, and would seriously like to go at least a few chapters without getting a description of a woman being abused and/or random graphic sex scene. There’s enough good story stuff to keep me intrigued, though. I’ll be reading Book 3 soon.

Life & Other Things

I got a new tattoo while I was in New Jersey. It’s not video game themed, but I love it all the same. Right now it’s an itchy mess of colourful scabs, but once it’s fully healed I shall share a picture of it.

There you have it! My monthly progress post thingy. Whatโ€™s anyone reading this up to these days? Comments section is down below if you want to share your thoughts on things!

โšกThanks for reading!โšก

If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblingsโ€ฆ I mean, articlesย here!

Really like what you read and feel like financially supporting Livid Lightning? HA! Probably not, but hey, here’s a couple ways to fuel my writing pipe dream!

My name is Ellen, and I've been babbling on the interwebz about video games for over 15 years. Video games themselves have been a large part of my life since 5-year-old me first encountered a SNES in a children's hospital. Fun times... Video game escapism is still the #1 coping mechanism for adult me these days.

  1. There are a lot of wonderful things about this post but I’m most of all glad that you’re doing well and that you had fun visiting the US as well! ๐Ÿ™‚ That Kirby you picked up is really awesome and so is the Final Fantasy artwork. I would be proud to own either one. I appreciate the shout-out as always and am glad you enjoyed reading it. Finally, congrats on your platinum! That seems like no easy feat and definitely something worth celebrating ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Belting, I guess it was MY recent USA trip that INSPIRED you to go OUT there, huh? Yes, it’s all thanks to ME. You’re WELCOME!

Customs really freaked out about my Nintendo Switch. One guy in Manchester had zero idea what it was and didn’t seem to have heard of Nintendo. Why, I almost punched that noob.

    1. Pffft…. I MAY have been inspired by your USA trip. MAYBE.

Customs wasn’t too bad for me! I put my Switch in the security basket thing outside of my carry on. On the way back to Canada my freaking bag of Dunkin Donuts coffee was taken for additional testing… ๐Ÿ™„

      1. Yeah I did that too, but I got some odd looks. But then it did cause a major fuss most whilst still in England. So that’s us Brits for you.

Donut surprise me about the donuts, though. The Americans love them things.

  3. I’m beginning to feel the same about social media. Advice for authors says we need to be on it daily, but I just can’t: Once or twice a week’s enough for me!
I hope you had fun in New York ๐Ÿ˜€ I went a few years ago and it was huge (and maybe a bit overwhelming!) That fanart’s awesome and I love collecting souvenirs ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. I’ve been pretty meh about social media lately. I find I’m constantly comparing my failures to the success of others and feeling bad about myself…. I need to just step away and refocus on me, eh.

Thank you!! New York was quite the freaking experience. My friend and I ended up walking 15km while taking in tons of sights, haha.

  4. The trip to US sounds like it was a lot of fun I’ve always wanted to visit NY myself, that Kirby is on point with his grumpy little face haha. I’m gonna miss seeing you on the socials but you enjoying real-life is what matters and congrats on getting the ME platinum.

    1. The USA is an amazing place!! Everyone I met was so friendly. Never judge a country by its political media frenzies, I guess, haha.

Thank you! Keep being awesome, dude. ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Thanks for the linkage! Some great posts to check out here, I shall enjoy trawling through those when I’m next bored at work. Which will probably happen about 8.30am on Monday.

Glad to hear you had a good trip! It’d be fun to meet some blogging friends, but then I’m also super-awkward and riddled with social anxiety so the prospect is also terrifying. However, I do know from experience that I’m not alone in that feeling ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. No problem! Thanks for triggering some happy memories of Kirby’s Dream Course. I dunno how many hours my mom and I spent playing that game, haha. I hope you find something you enjoy reading ๐Ÿ™‚

Thank you! I am a total nervous wreck in reality so this trip was a big accomplishment… You are definitely not alone there, haha/

  6. Iโ€™m great! Thanks for asking. ๐Ÿ˜€ Itโ€™s just sometimes I get so wrapped up in playing; I canโ€™t be bothered to take my hands off a controller, even when I skgnsdkgsdgpefsd.fsbdb bn.

  7. Thanks for the shout out! Your USA trip sounds amazing (I’m only a little jealous!). Glad to see you on here again and I look forward to reading any Mass Effect posts that come out. Well done on the platinum for the first one.

  8. I’m jealous that you got to meet Shameful Narcasisst, I imagine she’s just as fun in real life as she is in the virtual world. ๐Ÿ™‚
We’re headed to NYC this Friday! It’s my first time and my husband second time. (Although his first time he was just there for 6 hours.)

  9. Haha I love the relatable meme you posted. The “ME” face made me laugh. ๐Ÿ˜›
And yay, Kirby!! ๐Ÿ˜€ I love Kirby so much. I had a guinea pig years ago that I raised from a baby and had named Kirby. Haha she lived up to her namesake because she was adorable, awesome, and loved to eat! ๐Ÿ˜›
And how cool that you and Shameful Narcissist got to meet IRL! ๐Ÿ™‚ That’s awesome. Glad you had such a great trip! โค

Kirby is adorably awesome. I need to play more of his games someday. That’s totally awesome you named your guinea pig that!! ๐Ÿ˜€

Meeting TSN in reality was definitely a trip highlight! I can confirm she is even cooler offline. Thanks!
