N7: Platinum Mass Effect 2 (Week 1)

As soon as I Platinumed Mass Effect 1 on June 21st, I ejected the game disc from my PlayStation 3 and inserted my copy of Mass Effect 2. Rolling this trophy quest right along, eh! And, DAMN!! I forgot how freaking badass ME2’s opening is. Wow…

It took me a while to adjust to the combat system changes (especially after having just completed 4 consecutive playthroughs of ME1). For one, the new need for ammo in the form of a cooling clip mechanic was a big change. Cover is also infinitely more important than it was in the first game. Even playing ME2 on Casual difficulty, my Shepard gets shredded if I stay out in the open for too long. Oh and a global power cooldown was another change that was challenging to adjust to.

Anyway, here’s how Week 1 of my latest Platinum quest went down! I’m a little behind on these progress posts but I’m going to try to catch up. Babbling about Mass Effect is what Livid Lightning is all about these days!

WARNING: Lots of !!!SPOILERS!!! below. Stop reading and scrolling if you don’t want the Mass Effect trilogy ruined for you. You have been warned.

The vast majority of Mass Effect 2’s trophies are earned simply from completing missions, meaning I was able to claim A LOT of them during my first playthrough. During Week 1, I finished the “disabled” Collector vessel main mission (ZOMG I forgot the Collectors are Protheans!!), recruited everyone except Thane and Samara, did a ton of planet scanning, and knocked out two loyalty missions.

N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 1
That beginning, man. I mean, c’mon!! Your character dies in a spaceship explosion and is then resurrected by an evil pro-human organization. Few game openings have ever pulled me in like that.
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 2
They can rebuild her… they have the technology. Ellen Shepard – the billion credits woman!
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 3
The new armor customization options are really fun to play with! Gee, I wonder what other BioWare video game series this armor set is based on… 🐉
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 4
I would say voluntold, for sure. Not exactly thrilled to see Shepard working for Cerberus and their hella shady leader, The Illusive Man, but they did resurrect my character. I owe them thanks for that at least.
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 5
Took me a while to learn to cover, but the YMIR Mech is a great teacher. It was also cool to see Tali again in Freedom’s Progress! I let her take Veetor back to the Migrant Fleet for help, and she let me take his data on The Collectors. Win-win!
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 6
Cerberus not only rebuilt Shepard, they also rebuilt the Normandy! The fancy SR2 model has SO MANY upgrades and civilian class comforts. I was also ecstatic to see that Joker the sarcastic pilot and Dr. Chakwas joined Shepard on the dark side.
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 7
Scanning planets for resources is certainly tedious at times, but I find it oddly relaxing and enjoy watching my resource bars fill up. Gotta get all those upgrades before taking on the Suicide Mission!
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 8
Mordin, the very model of a scientist salarian, was my first Suicide Squad recruit. He was dealing with a Collector engineered plague on Omega. My job was to cut through the vorcha and release the cure into the air vents.
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 9
Yep. There was a trophy for setting bad guys on fire and making them scream. Yikes…
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 10
Woo!! Drinkin’ with Chakwas! Side note: if you would like to try out an amazing Dr. Chakwas inspired adult beverage in reality, check out Athena of AmbiGaming’s Good Doctor drink from her Spirits ‘n’ Sprites post series.
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 11
Got the fancy trophy for getting 30 headshot kills while helping out Archangel (aka Garrus). It wasn’t due to my precision accuracy or anything, that’s for sure… When you aim at the bad guy’s head and let loose with an assault rifle, a few bullets are bound hit. 😛
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 12
Poor Garrus… He went so vigilante that every mercenary group on Omega teamed up to kill him. Whoa! Luckily, my Shepard was there to help him escape relatively unscathed (minus a bullet to the face). You are still just as beautiful as ever, Garrus.
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 13
I did not have the Overlord DLC on my PC playthrough last year so this mission was all new to me. Basically, a bad VI had taken over a Cerberus research facility and was threatening to spread across the galaxy. One of the trophies needed me to pick up 5 data packets while controlling the super fragile Hammerhead. It took me a while to get the hang of not dying to Cerberus turrets.
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 14
Holy crap… I was NOT prepared for the brutal truth behind the Overlord Project. While trying to find a way to take advantage of the geth’s religious side, a mad Cerberus scientist experimented on his autistic savant brother and turned him into a hybrid supercomputer. Ugh! My Shepard made sure the poor guy will get help with the Alliance after shutting that shit down. Damn!
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 15
Kasumi was a DLC character missing on my PC playthrough so yay for more new content! I love her hood and badass ways. Her loyalty mission required me to infiltrate a fancy party and destroy stuff. Kasumi wanted to recover her deceased lover’s memories in the form of a “Graybox” from an evil rich guy. I let her keep it, even though her lover told her to destroy the graybox and move on in a message she found.
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 16
While breaking Jack the biotic terror out of a sketchy for profit prison, I got the trophy for overloading lots of enemy shields. The game clearly rewards use of tactics!
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 17
Jack is one of the most interesting and tragic characters in the Mass Effect series. Don’t tell her I said that or she’d probably kill me….
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 18
When I realized there was a trophy for punching things and then shooting them, I got right on that!
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 19
The next member of BioWare’s Suicide Squad I recruited was Grunt, the tank born krogan. I got the pup from a zealot krogan scientist named Dr. Okeer (who was breeding an army of krogan for the Blue Suns). He passed on his entire legacy to Grunt before dying.
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 20
Hello, old frenemy! The Illusive Man, being the jerk that he is, lured the Collectors to another hapless human colony by using Kaidan as bait. Let’s just say he was not impressed Shepard works for Cerberus now and left with some harsh words. It was also horrifying to see how the Collector’s scooped up colonists…
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 21
Next I helped Tali with her mission on a planet with overheating sun mechanics (stay in the shade or your shields get fried). I helped her friend Kal’Reegar by convincing him not to go kamikaze on a Geth Colossus. She officially joined my crazy suicide mission after that.
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 22
I earned Jacob’s loyalty by tracking down his lost father. Apparently, the creep made himself king of an isolated planet by giving his crew poisoned food after they were marooned there.
N7 Platinum Mass Effect 2 Week 1 23
Finally, I finished the main quest mission to check out an “abandoned” Collector vessel. TL;DR – it was a trap (that the Illusive Man was aware of but didn’t say) and my Shepard blasted her way out without issue. My terrible memory made the “Collectors are Protheans” reveal a juicy surprise once again. See! This is why I do these progress babblings.

Thanks for reading!

If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblings… I mean, articles here!

Really like what you read and feel like financially supporting Livid Lightning? HA! Probably not, but hey, here’s a couple ways to fuel my writing pipe dream!

My name is Ellen, and I've been babbling on the interwebz about video games for over 15 years. Video games themselves have been a large part of my life since 5-year-old me first encountered a SNES in a children's hospital. Fun times... Video game escapism is still the #1 coping mechanism for adult me these days.

  1. Love this game definitely my favourite of the trilogy though I enjoy them all, yeah that the collectors are protheans reveal was definitely shocking and horrifying knowing that’s what the reapers do to the races they harvest
