Month of Mass Effect, Day 3: Stayin’ Classy

I’m shamelessly stealing the Mass Effect Month article series created by the always awesome Athena over on AmbiGaming in 2017 (which was the Mass Effect 10th anniversary) and turning it into one of those 30 day challenge thingys! Definitely check out Athena Veta’s great content on AmbiGaming and consider supporting her Video Game Relevancy Crusade (TM) on Patreon, if ya got a few bucks to spare.

Please Note: Enjoy… but be warned that there will be unmarked SPOILERS for all of the Mass Effect games. Read at your own risk!

Today’s Mass Effect series question: What’s your favorite class to play?

True to my own heart, my Commander Shepard preference is a simple Solider (I’ve also played as Adept, Engineer, and Infiltrator for trophy reasons). My preferred playstyle in any game is to run in with guns blazing and punch things, and then maybe ask questions later if any of my enemies are left standing. Playing Solider on the easy difficulties made my first Shepard feel like a total invincible warrior goddess. What a rush!

With my first Ryder in Andromeda, I adopted more of the Vanguard way. The biotic powers were so freaking amazing to play with, but I wanted to keep my brute force options open. Throwing kett around will always be a fond gaming memory of mine. I’m also grateful that SAM allows Ryder to be whatever class you want at any given time. This helped me a ton with Platinum Trophy requirements.

Thanks to Pathfinder Profiles, Ryder isn’t contained by a class like Shepard is.

My second Ryder was focused on Engineer for one primary reason: this was my Insanity difficulty run for the trophy. As a Master Engineer, I could let my squad mates and constructs wipe out all of the overpowered enemies while I hid safely in the corner. That “strategy” worked well for me!

Will I radically change my preferred playstyle to easily get a difficult PlayStation trophy? Of course I will. Hide Ryder, hide!

Thanks for reading!

If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblings… I mean, articles here!

Really like what you read and feel like financially supporting Livid Lightning? HA! Probably not, but hey, here’s a couple ways to fuel my writing pipe dream!

My name is Ellen, and I've been babbling on the interwebz about video games for over 15 years. Video games themselves have been a large part of my life since 5-year-old me first encountered a SNES in a children's hospital. Fun times... Video game escapism is still the #1 coping mechanism for adult me these days.

  1. I usually play soldier class in the ME trilogy I enjoy shooting the hell out of things 😅. Andromeda-wise I enjoyed that you could be a gun toting badass but still had access to tech and biotic abilities through SAM that was one of the best things they added for that game, I usually use a combination of biotic charge flamethrower and a good old fashioned assault rifle takes down most enemies.
