I’m shamelessly stealing the Mass Effect Month article series created by the always awesome Athena over on AmbiGaming in 2017 (which was the Mass Effect 10th anniversary) and turning it into one of those 30 day challenge thingys! Definitely check out Athena Veta’s great content on AmbiGaming and consider supporting her Video Game Relevancy Crusade (TM) on Patreon, if ya got a few bucks to spare.
Please Note: Enjoy… but be warned that there will be unmarked SPOILERS for all of the Mass Effect games. Read at your own risk!
Today’s Mass Effect series question: Who is your favorite character to romance?
My name is Ellen. I’m a demiromantic asexual, and I hate witnessing sex scenes in video games, which is the “reward” for many of the Mass Effect series romances. I also find most of the romance stories overly, um, dramatic? I guess I don’t really understand since I’ve never been in a romance IRL. Meh! Power to those who enjoy that sex stuff in games (I’m not against people enjoying themselves AT ALL, to be clear), but options to easily skip the sex scenes in games that aren’t primarily sexual activity focused would be greatly appreciated.
But yeah, my absolute favourite romance is the unofficial asexual one my first Shepard formed with Liara T’Soni. By declining all the official romance options with her, I had created an amazing super-BFF life partnership with her (in my interpretation, of course). We had each others’ backs no matter what horror was befalling the universe, amazing chats about life, many sarcastic jokes, and there was lots of hugging moments with NO kissing or sex. It was my dream life partnership.
I hope I can find that type of life partnership in real life one day. Until then, the non-super BFFs I’m closest to will ALWAYS have my full support and mean the world to me (even the ones who aren’t in contact with me right now), as I learn how to properly take a backseat to their primary relationships. I can’t even begin to describe how much damage my stupid jealousy has done to my close friendships over the years. Alas. I will put that pattern to an end now that I understand me. Those days are behind me.
In Andromeda, I was absolutely shocked to find out I’d love to be Jaal’s life partner as well. Talking to him about how he processes his intense emotions and learning about how close he is with is huge family was great. His mom even sent my Ryder a few emails approving of our relationship (adorable!). When the time for the big sex scene reward came, he was completely okay with my Ryder declining, scooping her up in his arms and saying he loved her instead (I’m ignoring the kiss, but other than that, awesome!).
