Month of Mass Effect, Day 11: Amazing Asari

I’m shamelessly stealing the Mass Effect Month article series created by the always awesome Athena over on AmbiGaming in 2017 (which was the Mass Effect 10th anniversary) and turning it into one of those 30 day challenge thingys! Definitely check out Athena Veta’s great content on AmbiGaming and consider supporting her Video Game Relevancy Crusade (TM) on Patreon, if ya got a few bucks to spare.

Please Note: Enjoy… but be warned that there will be unmarked SPOILERS for all of the Mass Effect games. Read at your own risk!

Today’s Mass Effect series question: Which species is your favourite?

There are SO MANY unique alien species in the Mass Effect series. It’s actually quite impressive how much depth and lore there is behind each one. Superb job with story weaving there, BioWare.

I can easily pick a favourite, though! And that would of course be the asari: a monogendered race of badass blue women with biotic powers and a strong military system. Gender doesn’t mean a damn thing to the asari, and thus are able to partner with virtually anyone they want to. Plus they can live for, like, a thousand years. That’s freaking amazing!

Although members of the asari are often portrayed in a, um, overtly sexual light in the games (read: a lot of them are seductresses and strippers), the asari reproduction meld does not actually require any of that sexual physical contact stuff I’m not a fan of. Liara stole my demiromantic asexual heart as soon as she told me that in Mass Effect 1. ❤

Wait… you mean we can have lots of blue children and I don’t even have to kiss you?? Just connect with you in a strong bond on an intense emotional level?? Oh, baby!

In closing, I love Liara!! Oh and the asari as a race, too, since that was today’s question answer, right? Liara rocks!!

Thanks for reading!

If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblings… I mean, articles here!

Really like what you read and feel like financially supporting Livid Lightning? HA! Probably not, but hey, here’s a couple ways to fuel my writing pipe dream!

My name is Ellen, and I've been babbling on the interwebz about video games for over 15 years. Video games themselves have been a large part of my life since 5-year-old me first encountered a SNES in a children's hospital. Fun times... Video game escapism is still the #1 coping mechanism for adult me these days.

  1. Mass Effect’s pantheon of alien races is fantastic, the Asari are far more than the sexual beings that a lot of people in the universe see them as, once you’ve gotten to know Liara, Samarra or Peebee they’re an incredibly diverse race. The other races I particularly like include the Quarians and the Geth there is a rich backstory to those races that I think is one of the best stories in the trilogy, of course the Turians Salarians & the Krogan backstory is another particular favourite of mine the whole mess with the genophage I’m glad my Shepard put an end to that, anyway long story short I love them all with the Asari just sneaking the top spot.
