Month of Mass Effect, Day 24: Krogan Control

I’m shamelessly stealing the Mass Effect Month article series created by the always awesome Athena over on AmbiGaming in 2017 (which was the Mass Effect 10th anniversary) and turning it into one of those 30 day challenge thingys! Definitely check out Athena Veta’s great content on AmbiGaming and consider supporting her Video Game Relevancy Crusade (TM) on Patreon, if ya got a few bucks to spare.

Please Note: Enjoy… but be warned that there will be unmarked SPOILERS for all of the Mass Effect games. Read at your own risk!

Today’s Mass Effect series question: What is your opinion on the genophage?

Oh, the genophage conundrum… I could overthink on this topic for hours and still not come up with the “right” answer. Morally grey areas are the worst, eh?

For starters, I wholeheartedly support the krogan as a species. They are a race of violent badass warriors who don’t take crap from anyone in the galaxy. They remind me a lot of the Klingons from the Star Trek series in terms of culture and whatnot. Heck, Michael Dorn (aka Worf) voices a krogan named Gatatog Uvenk in Mass Effect 2. Without them the Milky Way would have been overrun by the rachni back in the day. But there was no stopping the krogan themselves once they rebelled against the galaxy. Thus, the genophage was unleashed upon them by the salarians.

Well, when you put it like that…

Biological weapons are bad and that’s what the genophage is. This awful genetic mutation doesn’t cause infertility in the krogan per se, it effects krogan pregnancy viability. That’s right…. the vast majority of krogan mothers get to endure the unimaginable pain of stillbirths, and I can’t even begin to describe how horrific that must be for them. If the genophage wasn’t unleashed, however, the krogan would have easily destroyed all other life in the galaxy, I have no doubts about that. Surely there was another way to end the Krogan Rebellions, though? Should the genophage have been unleashed in the first place? I really can’t answer that question. My morals are stuck in a stalemate.

No one could’ve hoped to stand up against the unstoppable might of the old krogan.

I do fully support curing the genophage in Mass Effect 3. That is the right thing to do with no doubts in my mind at all. The krogan want to heal as a species and no one else in the galaxy has the right to deny them that. The broken krogan of the present day should not be judged by the mistakes of their ancestors. They have more than paid for their crimes against the galaxy. It was such a bittersweet moment when Mordin Solus sacrificed himself to help the entire krogan race. That final act definitely redeemed him for helping modify the genophage when it was discovered the krogan were growing resistant to it.

Really like what you read and feel like financially supporting Livid Lightning? HA! Probably not, but hey, here’s a couple ways to fuel my writing pipe dream!

My name is Ellen, and I've been babbling on the interwebz about video games for over 15 years. Video games themselves have been a large part of my life since 5-year-old me first encountered a SNES in a children's hospital. Fun times... Video game escapism is still the #1 coping mechanism for adult me these days.

  1. Yes! The krogan are my buddies, I will always cure the genophage. Wrex is like a brother to me as well. The Dalatress can go to hell. There’s only three salarians I like anyway. No way, Michael Dorn was a krogan? Now I gotta play again!
