Month of Mass Effect, Day 28: Pick Yer Ending Pill

I’m shamelessly stealing the Mass Effect Month article series created by the always awesome Athena over on AmbiGaming in 2017 (which was the Mass Effect 10th anniversary) and turning it into one of those 30 day challenge thingys! Definitely check out Athena Veta’s great content on AmbiGaming and consider supporting her Video Game Relevancy Crusade (TM) on Patreon, if ya got a few bucks to spare.

Please Note: Enjoy… but be warned that there will be unmarked SPOILERS for all of the Mass Effect games. Read at your own risk!

Today’s Mass Effect series question: Destroy, control, or synthesize?

If you’ve been following me along on this crazy Mass Effect article spree (thank you), you’ll know I’m a shameless synthetic sympathizer. Life is life and all life is precious. Keep that in mind as I babble on.

Ugh! The hardest (and weirdest) choice in the games is how Shepard will use the Crucible at the end of Mass Effect 3 to stop the Reaper rampage. I hate hard choices!! This one is brutal. Your options are:

  1. Control – Shepard sacrifices their human form to become an AI that controls the Reapers for eternity.
  2. Destroy – Shepard sacrifices themselves to destroy all the Reapers. BUT all other synthetic life in the galaxy will be wiped out as well (including my geth allies and EDI).
  3. Synthesis – Shepard sacrifices themselves and their DNA is used as a catalyst to fuse all organic and synthetic life forms into one way of being, thus bringing about galactic harmony. It’s, like, a higher form of life, man.

Jeez! For me, Control was never a consideration. The power of the Reapers is too great for one being (even my Shepard), and it seemed like something the evil Illusive Man would do. Destroy would have been a no-brainer without the little side effect of destroying the geth and EDI. No!! I just couldn’t bring myself to sacrifice my beloved synthetic buddies, who are just as valid a life form as anyone organic. Fight me!

I really had no other choice…

So that left Synthesis, aka the green ending. Yeah… I regretted my decision immediately after discussing it with an old friend of mine (they wisely pointed out that Synthesis would be something Saren would do…. yikes). But after pondering it for a bit, I think I made the right call. Seeing how happy everyone was living thanks to my Shepard’s sacrifice was so beautiful. Everyone glowing green did creep me out just a tad, though… whatever!

Creepy galactic harmony FTW!

I’ll be doing at least two more playthroughs of Mass Effect 3 in the near future for my Platinum Trophy quest. I will definitely be picking Destroy on Ellen Shepard the 2nd and Control on Dick Shepard, Space Jerkoff. Can’t wait to see those endings! I know I could just Youtube them or whatever, but no. I want to be rewarded when my characters get there.

Thanks for reading!

If for some odd reason you want to read more of my posts, you can find a somewhat organized (and usually up to date) archive of my ramblings… I mean, articles here!

Really like what you read and feel like financially supporting Livid Lightning? HA! Probably not, but hey, here’s a couple ways to fuel my writing pipe dream!

"Lightning" Ellen

My name is Ellen, and I've been babbling on the interwebz about video games for over 15 years. Video games themselves have been a large part of my life since 5-year-old me first encountered a SNES in a children's hospital. Fun times... Video game escapism is still the #1 coping mechanism for adult me these days.

  1. I’ve played the games so often I’ve seen all the options many times and I’d say my preferred option of the 3 is control, destroy like you’ve said means wiping out all synthetic life so that ending sucks space balls, synthesis I can see the point of but there’s something about forcing this choice on the entire galaxy that rubs me slightly wrong, the control option while not ideal I think was the most fitting for my Shepard it was the ultimate sacrifice to protect my friends and keep the galaxy as it is. I wish there was another choice it’s awful seeing Shepard die whichever choice you make.

      1. I have done Synthesis a couple of times and I wish there was a way for Shepard to do it without sacrificing themselves. I had to play through the trilogy multiple times before I realized that it was what Saren wanted! And I’ve played through it probably almost ten times now. I saw some fan art of him, the Illusive Man and Anderson each representing what they want for the good of the galaxy. But yeah, I’ve done Destroy the most.

  2. I picked destroy because I believed the Reapers had to be stopped. I just don’t really like how everything that led up to that point just didn’t matter, the friends we made along the way and our choices along the way didn’t really matter in the end. It was just ughh, makes me mad still to this day and I believe the whole color thing should’ve been dealt better.

      1. You do have a point but not taking in account the journey that led up to the ending and led up to this epic conclusion was a bit disappointing. UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, I still feel so salty and I don’t even know why when it was 7 years ago lmao.

But yes, Mass Effect is one heck of a journey! I will gladly do it all over again in remastered form!
